Welcome to the 2016-17 school year! As the Executive Director of Secondary Education, I look forward to supporting the learners in our district around several key initiatives.
The district is very proud to be rolling out our technology plan, delivering chromebooks to each student grades six through twelve. Teachers have been provided professional development around using technology more intentionally to support learning in the classrooms. Students will also be using their computers in the classroom and at home to collaborate, study, and show proficiency. This will be a transition for all of us, so we appreciate your patience through this exciting time.
We continue to work with our secondary schools on implementing Positive Behavior Interventions and Supports (PBIS) as a proactive approach to establishing the behavioral supports and social culture needed for all students to achieve social, emotional and academic success. Attention is focused on creating and sustaining primary (school-wide), secondary (classroom), and tertiary (individual) systems of support that improve lifestyle results (personal, health, social, family, work, recreation) for all youth by making targeted misbehavior less effective, efficient, and relevant, and desired behavior more functional. This is a program that is a proactive and a positive approach to student discipline.
Our secondary schools are also developing school improvement plans around four SMART goals. Each school is setting goals around technology, student achievement, safety and attendance. Each of these areas are aligned to the district strategic plan.
The learning and teaching department is focusing on a middle grades (6-8) math adoption this year. The new math curriculum for grades 6, 7 and 8 was rolled out this fall and also provides teacher professional development for teachers.
We are also working on the Core 24 state mandate, the new set of credit requirements for high school graduation from the Washington State Board of Education. This mandate requires that graduates now have a minimum of 24 credits in order to receive a high school diploma. Additionally, Core 24 will require students to develop a high school and beyond plan, articulating courses that will help them achieve their goals. Core 24 requirements will provide students with a strong academic foundation, and the flexibility to prepare them for whatever path they choose—the workforce, an apprenticeship in the trades, or a community or four-year college.
We have great things happening in Secondary Education with the Marysville School District. I look forward to a productive and successful school year for each and every one of our students!
