Good morning, families. A collision on I-5 between Smokey Point and Marysville earlier this morning is causing major traffic delays for the morning commute. At this time two lanes of traffic are open and alternate routes are being used, also congesting and slowing traffic in those areas and creating a 5 - 10 mile back up. This will cause delays in some of our school bus routes this morning. No buses or district vehicles were involved in the collision. If you live in areas where access to I-5 is used, buses will arrive to pick up your child but they may be late. Additional information is available on local news stations.

Thank you again for your patience this week. UPDATE, April 23 @ 4:18 PM: NWRDC is reporting continued outages at their facility which provides us with Skyward, IEPOnline, WESPAC and Employee Access. They are reporting the outage will continue through Wednesday. We will continue to keep you updated as we learn more. Attention Families: This afternoon we received word that Skyward has a system-wide outage due to a bad firmware patch applied to all of their network switches, which has made all of their services inoperative. We do not have an ETA on the restoration of services at this time, just that they are working with the switch vendor to replace the switches at NWRDC.

UPDATE @ 4:18 PM: NWRDC is reporting continued outages at their facility which provides us with Skyward, IEPOnline, WESPAC and Employee Access. They are reporting the outage will continue through tomorrow and Wednesday. WSIPC is saying Skyward may not be available going into tomorrow, Monday, April 23 and we are working on a contingency plan. We will let you know just as soon as services are restored.

Windy weather advisory! It's almost Thanksgiving and that means windstorms. PUD and PSE have announced the potential for high winds this afternoon, which could cause downed trees and power outages. This may be especially problematic for elementary schools with bus routes in heavily treed areas. In the event a bus cannot safely transport students home due to downed trees or power lines and your bus is delayed, re-routed or returned to school, a SchoolMessenger message will go out from the district office to keep you informed. Thank you for joining us in keeping our students staff this fall and winter!

Did you know? In 2015, Congress passed a new federal education law called the Every Student Succeeds Act. This Act works to shine light on performance gaps between student groups that persist in our schools. In our state, the Office of Superintendent of Public Instruction (OSPI) is responsible for implementing this law. Washington’s ESSA Plan outlines initiatives to attract and retain effective educators, especially for students of color and low-income students. Learn more at k12.wa.us/ESSA.

A bystander is someone who sees bullying happening and chooses to react by laughing, giggling, pointing, staring, doing nothing, whispering to other people about it or gossiping about it. They might play 'the messenger' between bully and victim, spread rumors they have heard or join in when a bully is ignoring or excluding someone. Or a bystander might 'like' or favorite a mean post on Facebook, Instagram or other social media site. Being a bystander is like saying YOU agree with the bully. Not cool. Our hearts and prayers are with the students and families in the Freeman School District, and the community members of Rockford, Washington. Marysville School District Superintendent, Dr. Becky Berg and a trauma-informed professional are on their way to Rockford to provide additional support and resources during this time. As a school district that has been impacted by a similar senseless tragedy, we know Rockford has a long road to recovery ahead. The Marysville School District will stand by them and provide the support and care needed in the days and months to come. Thank you to the Empire Health Foundation for providing the resources for them to make to make this trip.
