Good News! Free Meals Program Extended The USDA recently passed a waiver to extend the free meals program into the fall. This extension means that our school district will be able to continue to provide free meals for all children ages 1 - 18 and those enrolled in our online and 18 - 21-year old programs. This good news significantly impacts our program and the ways we can provide meal services for children. We had recently shared that the free meal program had ended and adjusted the way that meals would be available. With the new extension, we are now working on developing our meal distribution procedure for the start of school and into the fall. It will be different from the spring and the summer in some ways, but most importantly, we will be able to continue to provide free meals for children. Please stay tuned for more information in the coming days.

Recently, our first and second year new teachers spent half their day on a bus tour of the community. They made several stops along the way including a visit at City Hall with Mayor Jon Nehring. Preston Dwoskin, former MSD graduate, community and staff member helped to narrate the tour along with Curriculum Director Brynn Marcum and TOSA Lisa Sophie. Our new teachers also had the opportunity to visit The Tulalip Tribes Hibulb museum to learn more about the Tribes’ history and culture, Since Time Immemorial curriculum and the Lushootseed language. What a great opportunity for our teachers to learn about the community that is home to the children and families we serve. #WeAreMSD

Music4Life Information Night Tonight! Did you know that children who participate in instrumental music activities do better in math, science, history, international languages, literature, reading, writing, and computer science, in addition to what it teaches in terms of teamwork and self-discipline? Not all students want to participate in instrumental music, but for those who do, and whose families cannot afford a musical instrument, this becomes an insurmountable barrier to the full basic education guaranteed to all students by the Washington State Constitution. The Marysville School District has partnered with Music4Life to bring musical instruments into the hands of students who may not otherwise be able to participate. Music4Life (www.Music4Life.org) is a community-wide activity that was started as a demonstration project for Seattle Public Schools and is now being implemented in many school districts in the region including Marysville. Music4Life provides hundreds of ready-to-play musical instruments at no charge to participating public school districts. We hope you will join us tonight, Thursday, February 21, at 7:00 PM for the informational meeting to learn more about the Music4Life program and opportunity!

The type of questions that you ask will set the tone of the session and the entire counseling process. Questions occur in two forms. An open question is one that cannot be answered with a simple ‘yes’ or ‘no’ and it requires reflection or exploration.. A Brief Overview of Black History Month Black History Month officially began in 1976, when President Gerald R. Ford asked Americans to "seize the opportunity to honor the too-often neglected accomplishments of black Americans in every area of endeavor throughout our history." Every year since then, every American president has dedicated February as African American History Month. The first celebration of African American contributions to the United States was established by the historian Carter G. Woodson. The event was held in February 1926 and was called Negro History Week. The week in February included the birthdays of Abraham Lincoln (February 12, 1809) and Frederick Douglass (born in February 1818). Over the years, more Americans, black and white, joined the celebrations each February. In the 1960s, the civil rights movement further emphasized the impact of African Americans in American culture and throughout United States history. Follow the link to bring the celebration of Black History Month into your classroom or home with activities, lesson plans, book resources, and interactive histories. https://www.scholastic.com/teachers/collections/teaching-content/black-history-month/ GET CONNECTED @MarysvilleSD or visit msd25.org for the latest updates from your school district.

CTE students at MP in teacher Chuck Nichols Advanced Manufacturing / Aerospace course had the opportunity to tour training and employment facilities last Wednesday. They went to EvCC's Advanced Manufacturing Training & Education Center AMTEC to participate in Manufacturing Day which was designed to show high school students the wide variety of careers to explore in the manufacturing and aerospace industry. They met with instructors and students in the welding, machining, fabrication, 3D design and more and learned about the training requirements and area job possibilities. They were treated to lunch and then boarded the bus to Arlington to tour AMT Senior Aerospace. We were not able to take photos for security reasons (students suffered a bit as they handed their cell phones over at the front desk :) ). We know that this experience of seeing the "hands on" training and work that is available to them will help them in crafting their post high school plans.

UPDATE - 6:34 AM: This morning, school and district administration met with school staff. The safety of students is our top priority and staff has been reminded to be extra vigilant. School will run on a normal schedule, and Marysville Pilchuck will have extra police and staff presence as students arrive and throughout the day. If you choose to keep your child home today, please make sure to call the attendance line at 360-965-2001. Absences will be excused. Safety Notification, 4:10 PM: On Tuesday, September 25, at approximately 2:30 p.m., school administration became aware of a handwritten message on a bathroom wall at Marysville Pilchuck High School. The message stated that there would be a shooting on Thursday. We take all information of this nature seriously and our staff immediately put a safety plan in motion. We notified the Marysville Police Department and out of an abundance of caution we felt it important to notify our families. We continue to work with law enforcement in our decision-making process and plan to operate school on a normal schedule tomorrow. Parents and students will be notified of any changes. Please know that safety is our top priority. We will take all precautions to keep all students and staff safe. Read the complete letter at https://goo.gl/z6eqSJ

Chances are your child will need to miss a few days of school this year. While some absences might seem more excusable, the impact is actually the same whether your child is sick, ditching or taking a family trip. Any absence makes it harder for your child to keep up with the everyday classroom learning that is needed to grow and succeed. Some absences are unavoidable; but too many will make your child fall behind and they might not be able to catch up. Save absences for when it is absolutely necessary and make sure they are in #SchoolEveryDay!

On Wednesday, The Washington State Board of Education joined #MSD25 staff at Quil Ceda Tulalip Elementary for a listening and learning session! The goal was to work together to better integrate the current federal framework for RAD (Required Action School/District), state initiatives, and strategic directions from Office of Superintendent of Public Instruction (OSPI). The visit allowed OSPI and SBE members to engage in a deeper discussion on the data and options for potential revisions to state accountability which could positively impact the work of the school and staff. Thanks to everyone who joined us to learn and grow!

The safety of our students is our highest priority and these wonderful officers help us provide it every day! Last week we celebrated a great partnership between #MSD25 and #MarysvillePD, and thanked them for their commitment to the health, safety and security of students and staff in the Marysville School District. This team knows it takes a village to raise a child, and they go above and beyond the call of duty to inspire our youth and build a strong community.

As early as elementary school, students who miss just two school days each month are more likely to fall behind in reading, writing and math, even if the absences are excused. While some challenges to a child’s attendance are unavoidable, it’s important to understand the impact of each absence. Parents can prepare their children for a lifetime of success by making regular school attendance a priority and understanding the reasons for their child’s absences.
