Dear Marysville School District Families,
Welcome to the end of March! It is hard to believe that Spring Break (April 2 – 6) is just around the corner.
As you may well know, many students are empowered and making their voices heard in response to a nation-wide initiative to make schools safer places to learn, play and grow without fear of violent acts such as school shootings. Additionally, students are choosing to honor the lives of those lost in such tragic events. On March 14, and recently on March 24, students across the district and community participated in events related to this cause.
There is another nation-wide event planned on April 20 named ‘A National Day of Action’ and marks the 18th year since the senseless shooting at Columbine High School.
School districts locally and across the nation have made decisions weighing students’ First Amendment Rights to free speech with staying in class. On March 14 students were permitted to participate in optional student-led peaceful gatherings on their school campuses. We were proud of the actions of the students as they gathered to honor the victims of Parkland and others, including our own. The students were respectful and had purpose. Students feeling passion and advocacy about an issue can be a powerful learning experience.
April 20 in the Marysville School District will be a normal school day. School/classes will be in session on this scheduled early release day. Students will again be permitted to participate in optional student-led activities on campus. However, leaving campus will not be permitted without prior consent from a parent or guardian. The April 20 nation-wide organizers of the event are encouraging students to walk out of classes at 10:00 am and remain out of school for the remainder of the day.
Some students may elect to participate, while others may not. We will provide supervision for students on campus and in classes in either case. At the elementary and middle school levels, we do not anticipate students walking out of class but there may be other age-appropriate activities planned to share thoughts and feelings around these issues. If anything is planned, expect a communication from your child’s school.
We want to ensure ALL students feel safe and respected no matter what they choose to do. Again, school and classes will be in session. Attendance will be taken for each class. We encourage you to talk with your child about their participation and make the decision most appropriate for you and your child.
