Message to Families Regarding Nation-wide Marches
Message to Families Regarding Nation-wide Marches
Marysville School District
Thursday, March 01, 2018

Dear Marysville School District Families,

It has come to our attention that students at the high school level are planning to participate in the national student-led marches occurring on March 14 and April 20 to end school shootings and to honor the victims of these senseless tragedies. Some students may elect to march, while others may choose not to participate. We will provide supervision for students on campus in either case.

At the elementary and middle school levels, we do not anticipate students walking out of class to march but there may be other age-appropriate activities planned to share thoughts and feelings around these issues.

We are proud of the student representatives from schools who are collaborating and taking action for something they believe in. This is a good lesson in democracy and their right to have a voice in government. Students feeling passion and advocacy about an issue can be a powerful learning experience. Students are spreading the word about these events through social media and other channels. While the school district is not sponsoring either activity, we stand united with our students.

That said we want to ensure ALL students feel safe and respected no matter what they choose to do. School and classes will be operating on normal schedules. Attendance will be taken, and excused for students who participate in these on-campus events. We encourage you to talk with your child about the marches and their participation. Our first priority is to keep all students safe, so we will not allow students to leave campus. School Resource Officers from the Marysville Police Department will also be available to assist.

Since the Florida school shooting on February 14, many student-led events are being planned across the state and country, and may occur in the coming weeks and months. We will continue to keep you posted on any other local events that may affect the school day.

Please feel free to reach out to your child’s school or the district office if you have any questions.

Jason Thompson,
Acting Superintendent
