MMS Letter from Principal

December 8, 2021

Dear MMS Families and Staff,

Earlier today you were notified about an alleged threat at our school. The purpose of this letter is to provide an update and additional information.

This morning Marysville School District security was made aware of a social media post that was concerning. Law enforcement was contacted and the report was investigated. The Marysville Police, District Security, and Building Administration determined that there was no credible threat. Upon further investigation, we learned that the words in the social media post were misunderstood by others and misinformation was spread resulting in anxiety and worry. At no time was there any direct threat and at no time were students or staff in danger.

Our commitment to the safety of students and staff is central to who we are. We take all reports seriously and follow the necessary steps to ensure the safety and well-being of each individual.

When reports such as these occur it provides each of us an opportunity for learning. We ask our students and families to contact us directly at any time if you are concerned about something you read, see, or hear. Our school and the district also have reporting tools available through SafeSchools at https://msvl-wa.safeschoolsalert.com/ which is accessible 24/7.

We remain committed in our work to ensure the safety of each student and to educate our students to report concerns immediately to their parents or guardians, their teachers, or school administrators. We encourage our families to talk together about their feelings. This will help us to take immediate action where needed and can help squelch rumors that spread quickly in online forums.

Out of an abundance of caution and to support our students and school, we did maintain a police and security presence at the school for the remainder of the day. Tomorrow, like other days, our counselors will be available to talk with students as needed.

Thank you for your continued partnership and support. If you have any questions or concerns, please feel free to reach out. I look forward to seeing our students in school tomorrow.

Sincerely,

Mary Ingraham
Principal
